    What this world clock does differently

    Most world clocks give you a column of digits. That tells you the number but not what it means: 15:00 requires a moment's arithmetic before you know whether it is a reasonable hour to call someone. This one leads with an analogue face tinted by the local time of day, so you perceive afternoon before you read three o'clock.

    Below the clock, every city gets a band drawn against a shared horizontal axis of absolute time. A vertical line through those bands is the same instant everywhere, which means the horizontal shift between two bands is the offset between those two cities — you can see the difference rather than calculate it.     Using it as a time zone converter

    Reading the current time is the easy half. The harder question is usually the other one — if I pick 9am here, what is that over there? — and this tool answers it without converting anything one city at a time.

    1. Add the cities you care about. Search accepts city names, countries, airport codes and abbreviations, so blr, bangalore and india all reach the same clock.
    2. Drag anywhere on the timeline to the hour you have in mind, or focus the slider and use the arrow keys — fifteen minutes a step, an hour with Shift held.
    3. Read every city at once. All the clocks, dates and labels move to that single instant together, so a conversion between four cities is one gesture rather than three sums.
    4. Press Copy times for a plain-text block to paste into chat, or copy the address bar to send someone the same set of clocks.

    Two things that trip up ordinary conversion are handled here rather than glossed over. The offset between two cities is not a constant: when one changes its clocks and the other has not yet, the gap between them shifts for a few weeks, and the bands show that directly. And the calendar date can differ from yours at the instant you picked — the vertical rule inside each band marks that city's midnight, so you can see that your Friday afternoon is already someone else's Saturday before you promise a deadline.

    Reading the colours

    The daylight ramp runs through six phases rather than a simple light/dark split. Dawn is violet and dusk is rose, so a glance tells you whether a city is starting its day or ending it — the two moments a twelve-hour dial cannot distinguish on its own. Morning light runs cool and midday runs warm, mirroring how daylight actually shifts. A vertical rule inside a band marks local midnight, which is where that city's calendar date changes: useful when it is still Friday evening for you and already Saturday morning for a colleague.

    Daylight saving time, handled properly

    Time zone offsets are not constant. Daylight saving time (DST) moves them twice a year across Europe, most of North America and parts of the southern hemisphere, on dates that do not line up between them — and a surprising number of tools pretend otherwise. This one resolves the offset for the specific instant being displayed, so a city that changes its clocks part-way through the window renders that change rather than smearing it. The days on which the change happens are genuinely twenty-three or twenty-five hours long, and the timeline reflects that instead of forcing every day into the same width.

    Half-hour and forty-five-minute offsets are treated as first-class, not edge cases. India runs at UTC+5:30, Nepal at UTC+5:45, and the Chatham Islands at UTC+12:45 or +13:45 depending on the season. Any tool that models offsets as whole hours is wrong for well over a billion people.

    Every city in the picker, grouped by its standard offset from UTC — the offset it keeps outside daylight saving time. A city marked with an asterisk shifts by an hour for part of the year; the clocks above already account for that, because they read your browser's own time zone database rather than this list.

    Common time zone abbreviations

    Most questions about time are asked in letters rather than offsets — IST to EST, what is PST, GMT+2. These are the common ones, with what they stand for, the UTC offset they denote and where they are used. Every offset below is checked against your browser vendor's own time zone database when this page is built, so none of it is a remembered number.

    Treat them with some care: abbreviations are not a standard. Several sets of letters mean more than one thing, and the clashes are marked with a dagger below. IST is the worst of them — India Standard Time at UTC+5:30, Israel Standard Time at UTC+2, and Irish Standard Time at UTC+1. This is why the tool itself works in IANA zone names like Asia/Kolkata, which identify exactly one place, and why typing an abbreviation into the search box offers you every zone that uses it instead of guessing one.

    Everything here runs in your browser. Your time zone is read from your browser's own locale settings through the standard Intl API, which requires no permission prompt and makes no network request. We deliberately do not use the geolocation API: it returns coordinates that would need a third-party service to turn into a city name, and that would mean sending your location somewhere.

    Two things are remembered, both only on your own device. The list you build is written to the URL fragment — the part after the #, which browsers never transmit — so a link you share carries the cities without them passing through us. The same list is also saved to this browser's local storage so it is still there next time; that is a preference, not a cookie and not an account, it identifies nothing, and the Forget them link under the city search deletes it.     Frequently asked questions

    Does this ask for my location?
    No. Your time zone comes from your browser's own locale settings via the Intl API, which needs no permission prompt and makes no network request. We deliberately avoid the geolocation API: it returns coordinates, which would then need a third-party lookup to turn into a city name, and that would mean sending your location off your device. If the detected city name is not the one you'd use, click Rename and change it.
    Does it handle daylight saving time correctly?
    Yes, including the awkward parts. Offsets are resolved for the specific instant being displayed rather than assumed constant, so a city that changes clocks mid-window renders that change. The days on which the change happens are genuinely 23 or 25 hours long, and the timeline stretches or squeezes to match instead of pretending every day is 24 hours.
    Why is the clock face a different colour for each city?
    The face is tinted by that city's local time of day, running through six phases: night, dawn, morning, midday, afternoon and dusk. Dawn reads violet and dusk reads rose, so you can tell at a glance whether a city is starting its day or ending it — something a 12-hour dial alone cannot tell you.

    How do I find the time difference between two cities?
    Add both cities, then look at how far their bands sit apart on the shared timeline: that horizontal shift is the time difference. Each row also prints the difference from your own city as a signed figure, so New York reads +5:30 from Delhi. The difference is not always constant through the year — two cities that change their clocks on different dates are further apart for a few weeks each spring and autumn, and the timeline shows that rather than averaging it away.
    What do abbreviations like PST, IST, GMT and CET mean?
    They are informal names for a timezone offset, and the reference table on this page lists the common ones with what they stand for, the UTC offset they denote and where they are used. They are worth treating with care because they are not standardised: IST means India Standard Time at UTC+5:30, Israel Standard Time at UTC+2 and Irish Standard Time at UTC+1, and CST is used by both the United States and China. The tool itself works in IANA zone names, which are unambiguous.
    Can I use it to schedule a meeting across time zones?
    Yes, though it deliberately stops short of recommending a slot.
