Working across Singapore and New York
Singapore and New York are as close to opposite as two working cities get: thirteen hours apart while New York is on Eastern Standard Time, twelve while it is on Eastern Daylight Time. Whatever the hour is in one, it is roughly the same hour of the other half of the day in the other — nine in the morning in Singapore is eight or nine the previous evening in New York, and nine in the morning in New York is nine or ten at night in Singapore. The date is different for most of the working day, which is the part that catches people.
All of the movement is on the American side. Singapore has kept UTC+8 with no daylight saving since 1982; the United States goes forward on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November, so the gap is twelve hours between those dates and thirteen outside them. The dates printed above are computed from your browser's own time zone database for this year and next. A meeting fixed at a Singapore time shifts by an hour in New York every March and November; one fixed at a New York time shifts in Singapore.
There is no working-hour overlap in the usual sense. A Singapore nine-to-six day is 8pm to 5am in New York under EST and 9pm to 6am under EDT; a New York nine-to-six is 10pm to 7am in Singapore, or 9pm to 6am. Teams that span this pair either run a handover — Singapore's evening meets New York's morning at 8am Eastern, which is 8pm or 9pm in Singapore — or accept that one side works late once a week and rotate it. The daylight bands on the timeline above show which side is in the dark at any candidate hour, which settles the argument faster than a spreadsheet.
The date line sits inside this pair's working day, so read the hour table's day markers. "Friday end of day" in New York is Saturday morning in Singapore; a Monday 9am start in Singapore is Sunday evening in New York. Release windows written as "Sunday night US" are Monday daytime in Singapore, when the Asian office is fully staffed — which is either a feature or a problem depending on who is meant to be watching.
The abbreviations are straightforward: SGT is Singapore Time and nothing else; EST is US Eastern Standard Time, though people write it all year when for eight months New York is on EDT. Singapore's clock is shared by Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Manila, Taipei, Perth and all of China, so every number on this page applies unchanged to a colleague in any of them. The tool above uses Asia/Singapore and America/New_York and applies the American rule in force on the day shown. A Unix timestamp has no time zone — decode it in the epoch converter first.
