    EST to AEST time converter

US Eastern to Australian Eastern time on one live timeline — a gap that takes three different values a year because the two hemispheres move their clocks the opposite way — with the hour table for each.

Opens with New York (EST) as the home city and Sydney (AEST) beside it. Drag the timeline to any hour to convert it; add your own city with the search box. Nothing is sent to a server.

night · dawn · morning · midday · afternoon · dusk — click a city for the big clock, drag a band to travel through the day

How far apart are New York and Sydney?

It depends on the date. Sydney is 14 hours ahead of New York while New York is on EDT and Sydney on AEST. Sydney is 16 hours ahead of New York while New York is on EST and Sydney on AEDT. Sydney is 15 hours ahead of New York while New York is on EDT and Sydney on AEDT. The exact dates for 2026 and 2027 are below, worked out from the same time zone database your browser uses — not remembered.

Working across New York and Sydney

New York to Sydney is the pair where the time difference is least like a single number. Sydney is ahead of New York by fourteen, fifteen or sixteen hours depending on the date, and the reason is that both cities observe daylight saving but in opposite seasons. Sydney's summer is New York's winter: Sydney is on Australian Eastern Daylight Time, UTC+11, from early October to early April, while New York is on Eastern Standard Time, UTC−5, from early November to early March. When both are on their summer clocks the gap is fifteen hours; when Sydney is on summer time and New York on standard time it is sixteen; and when Sydney is on standard time and New York on daylight time — the northern summer — it is fourteen.

The changes do not coincide, so the year has four boundaries and the gap steps through them: sixteen hours from early November, fifteen from the second Sunday in March when New York goes forward, fourteen from the first Sunday in April when Sydney goes back, fifteen again from the first Sunday in October when Sydney goes forward, and sixteen from the first Sunday in November when New York goes back. The table above prints the exact dates for this year and next, computed from your browser's time zone database rather than remembered, and each column of the hour table is one of the three gaps. A recurring meeting between these cities moves four times a year, and the side that did not set the invite is surprised every time.

Fifteen hours is, for practical purposes, the other side of the clock, and the date is almost always different: Sydney's Tuesday morning is New York's Monday afternoon, and the day boundary sits inside the working day rather than at its edge. The rows in the hour table where the day changes are marked with a plus one, and it is worth reading them, because "Friday" is a different thing in the two cities for most of the hours that matter. There is one usable window: New York's late afternoon, about 4pm to 6pm, is Sydney's 7am to 10am the next morning. Everything else costs one side its night.

The abbreviations here are cleaner than in the IST pages, with one wrinkle. AEST is UTC+10 and AEDT is UTC+11, and they apply to Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart — but Brisbane and the rest of Queensland do not observe daylight saving and stay on AEST all year, so Brisbane is an hour behind Sydney every southern summer and on the same clock every winter. Perth is on AWST, UTC+8, with no daylight saving either, and Adelaide is on a half-hour offset. Add any of them in the tool above to see the bands separate and rejoin through the year.

If the time you are holding is a Unix timestamp rather than a clock reading, it carries no time zone and the conversion only starts once you know which wall clock it was written against — decode it in the epoch converter first. And if the question is really "what date is it there", the vertical rule inside each band above marks that city's midnight, which for this pair is the line that matters most.

    Frequently asked questions

How many hours ahead is Sydney of New York?
Fourteen, fifteen or sixteen hours depending on the date. Sixteen when Sydney is on daylight time and New York on standard time (November to early March); fifteen when both are on their summer clocks (March to early April, and October); fourteen when Sydney is on standard time and New York on daylight time (April to October). The exact dates for this year are in the table above.
What is 9am EST in Sydney time?
1am the next morning in Sydney during the Australian summer, when the gap is sixteen hours; midnight during the northern summer overlap at fifteen; and 11pm the same day when the gap is fourteen. Read the 9:00 row of the hour table above for all three.
What is 9am AEST in New York?
7pm the previous evening in New York when the gap is fourteen hours, 6pm at fifteen, and 5pm at sixteen. Sydney's morning is New York's late afternoon and evening of the day before.
Why does the New York–Sydney difference change four times a year?
Because both cities observe daylight saving but in opposite seasons, and they change on different dates. New York moves in March and November; Sydney moves in April and October. Each of the four changes shifts the gap by an hour.
Is Brisbane on the same time as Sydney?
Only in winter. Queensland does not observe daylight saving, so Brisbane stays on AEST, UTC+10, all year, while Sydney moves to AEDT, UTC+11, from October to April. For those months Brisbane is an hour behind Sydney.
